In first, Indian stem cells sent abroad to treat London patient

In the first case of its kind in the country, stem cells from a 50-year-old woman in Nagpur were donated to treat a patient abroad — a 40-year-old South Asian suffering from blood cancer and awaiting a transplant in a London hospital.

The process of providing the donor cells was monitored by Chennai-based NGO Datri, which is working to create a global database of potential donors that can be accessed by any patient suffering from disorders such as leukaemia and lymphoma and need stem cell transplant.
