More action on GMO labels expected next year

Californians may have voted against a ballot initiative that would have required labels on foods and beverages containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs), but labeling proponents say their campaign has only just begun.

First, ballot initiatives are being prepared for elections in Connecticut, Vermont, Oregon and Washington next year, with 92% of Americans supporting GMO labels, according to labeling proponents.

Furthermore, Canadian legislators are considering a national labeling law, and 61 countries already have national labeling requirements, proponents have said.

Second, proponents see President Barack Obama as generally in support of GMO labels.

Third, a petition requesting that the Food & Drug Administration reverse its position on GMO labels is pending at FDA. More than 1 million people signed the petition.
