Maurice Moloney, head of UK’s Rothamsted Research, the “oldest agriculture science center in the world,” speaks to Nature News about his time at the institute before he leaves for a new post at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation in Australia. Moloney talks about the vandalism of Rothamsted’s field trial of GM wheat, which had been modified to resist aphid attacks. Even though the center and the research had no ties to the activists’ “favorite, detested large companies,” Moloney says they still saw backlash from the community when conducting the field trials. “We were as transparent as we could be, because we weren’t looking for conflict,” Moloney said, “We did all the risk assessments; we did all the things you have to do” in order to begin a field trial.
