Want to know what’s bad about genetic engineering? Pretty much everything, if you’re Carl Pope, the Sierra Club’s former leader who over the years steered the once mainstream environmental group in a decidedly anti-science direction. In one rambling treatise, he takes aim at efforts to eradicate Dengue fever using genetically engineered mosquitoes; Monsanto; the USDA for its alleged limp compliance with Monsanto’s nefarious goals; the remarkable new corn seed that is resistant to a variety of herbicides; and US patent policy. It’s literally a tirade, remarkable for its selective use of the facts and its science-phobic view of innovation.
