Henry Bierlink, a former Washington dairy farmer and executive director of Whatcom Farm Friends, and Charles Antholt, an agricultural economist at Western Washington University, warn Washington voters to not be “fooled by I-522’s simple-sounding promises,” in an opinion piece in the Bellingham Herald. I-522, an initiative to label genetically engineered foods in the state, will be voted on in November’s election.
“As lifelong advocates for family farmers, we take seriously the information provided to consumers about the food our farmers grow and our families eat,” Bierlink and Antholt write. “That’s why, after careful analysis, we are joining the broad coalition of family farmers, scientists, doctors, businesses, and others who are opposed to Initiative 522 on Washington’s November ballot.”
Because I-522 is chock full of special exemptions and loopholes, consumers will not get the information, or transparency, they think they will be getting as a result of the inevitable increase in price for their food, the column says.
