What if the body could heal itself? Physicians at Rejuv Medical in Sartell are using the patient’s own stem cells to treat chronic injuries, pain and arthritis through injections that are supposed to stimulate healing. “What we are doing with these regenerative procedures … is we’re taking those healing cells out of the body and putting those healing cells in a concentrated form back into the area of the body that’s degenerating,” said Dr. Joel Baumgartner of Rejuv Medical. Because the stem cells used in the treatments come from the patient’s own body, it is generally not considered controversial, unlike embryonic-based stem cell treatments, but questions about the effectiveness of stem cell treatments remain.
