Maui in crosshairs as anti-GMO activists propose pesticide, GM crop disclosure bill

Maui Councilwoman Ellie Cochran has proposed a bill similar to Kauai’s Bill 2491 that calls for mandatory disclosure of pesticide use and use of genetically modified crops, pesticide buffer zones and an environmental and public health impacts study. She says that she would “hammer” any farmers, landscapers or gardeners who violate the bill with “civil fine[s] of not less than $10,000 and not more than $25,000 per day, per violation.” Maui’s marijuana growers would also be subject to the law, as most of the potent marijuana strains are genetically modified.
