GMO innovations inevitable in Tanzania

Modern biotechnology is an emerging novel tool with potentials in improving human and animal health, agriculture, industrial and agricultural production as well as environmental protection learnt in Uganda.

Speaking during a recently ended study tour of the Tanzanian high level delegation to Uganda that was organised by the Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH), the Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Food Security and Cooperative Godfrey Zambi said that Tanzania was not an island to continue delaying the research of modern biotechnology in the country.

“There is no way we can avoid it because powerful nations like America, China, Australia, Argentina, Brazil and some African countries like Ghana, Egypt, South Africa, Sudan and Burkina Faso have also introduced modern biotechnology in their countries,” he explained.

“So, when we are going back home we should be committed to ensure that this technology is brought on board in research like our Uganda counterparts.”

He revealed that before going to the Ugandan study tour most of the Members of Parliament in that convoy were unaware of the potential of the technology, but after the visit and seminar from their Ugandan counterparts, most of them have declared that they had been enlightened on the huge potential the technology can offer.

“The important thing I have grasped here is that the Ugandan government is very committed to ensure its institutions dealing with modern biotechnology are well committed and equipped with the needed resources.”
