Lazaro Peres is a plant physiologist at the University of São Paulo in Brazil. “De novo domestication” is the process of domesticating wild plant species using genetic engineering. This could be done within or between species, by inserting desirable traits from wild species into modern crops or vice versa. De novo domestication has the potential to expand genetic diversity in crops, and improve global food security.
