The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) awarded to two Sri Lankan researchers for showing that the “deadly herbicide”glyphosate causes kidney disease in farmers. The scientists formed a hypothesis and eventually measured heavy metals and farm chemicals in urine. But there was never any evidence supporting the causal link between glyphosate and kidney disease.
The research is what the research is, but AAAS made a huge blunder in promoting a completely incorrect interpretation of the current literature. Of course, this situation has fueled activist allegations of multinational corporate conspiracy to censor evidence that threatens the chemical industry’s bottom line, when it really was just an organization mistakenly promoting incomplete science. University of Florida professor of horticultural sciences Kevin Folta explores how the AAAS got things so wrong.
