Hate GMOs? Don’t look now, they’re everywhere!

For those who hate GMOs, the Westminster Dog Show must be quite a nightmare-inducing event: Humans, over the course of our entire history, have always attempted to control and manipulate everything in nature that we can get our hands on.

  1. Selective breeding within a plant or animal species and transgenic manipulation across species kingdoms are worlds apart. A fish doesn’t share D.N.A with a Tomato because without Transgenic technology and human intervention it will never happen. A coyote and a dog are in the same species domain so they can cross breed if they have to for survival. We change crops over hundreds of years by selecting the seeds of the desirable traits. This is so basic a five year old can tell the difference…why do proponents of biotech always use this argument.? Please explain how these two aspects of reproduction are in any way similar. Biotechnology is in its infancy, yes it took thousands of years to crack the genome code, but we’re now going boldly where we’ve never gone before. Maybe we should be asking “Is this really a good idea?”

    • All life on earth is descended from the same common ancestor and therefore we share many cell processes. Genes are interchangeable. Have you ever considered that your fears resemble Christian anti-evolution thinking?
