Genetic Literacy Project’s Top 6 Stories for the Week

From this past week, here are the #GLPTop6 among many great stories on human and agriculture genetics around the world. Please share and help spread the news!

  1. Vermont not victim of GMO ‘pollution,’ as organic activist claims by Louise Calderwood
  2. Scientist develop ‘biofortified’ canola seed for production of oil with heart-healthy fats by Mikel Shybut
  3. Media again mangles epigenetics: Shutting off ‘love hormone’ unlikely to make us less social by Nicholas Staropoli
  4. ACLU to Myriad Genetics: Patients, not companies, own personal genetic data by Meredith Knight
  5. Has WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) shifted from analysis to advocacy? by David Zaruk
  6. NASA’s spaceflight DNA sequencer: What will it do for science and medicine? by David Warmflash

  1. Thank you – everybody – for letting me be part of the discussion
re. GMOs on this site; it was an eye-opener.

But, as experienced, (as I see it) most of the exchanges – – IF ONE DOESN’T AGREE WITH PRO-GMO THINKING – – result in name calling, and derogatory remarks (“you stupid – – – you know nothing about science”), with only (a few real scientists) focusing on facts.

Example (again, as I see it): Prof. Seralini’s – – feeding SD rats both types of GM-corn, and observing a greatly increased number of
tumors and organ-malfunctions in the GM-corn fed treated groups. – – very similar (in going past the ”90-day established industry studies”) to my longevity studies (at RU, Chicago) combining
anti-aging modalities (to see if, what, results – actually near 100% – could be achieved). To make strong negative remarks (I am being polite by not exactly quoting remarks, and who made them) about Seralini – – one of the most respected European scientists in this field (like it or not, recognized by getting awards, his papers often quoted to upcoming young researchers as “perfect,” and “precise as a thesis,” – – IS JUVENILE, LACKING INTEGRITY, and totally unnecessary. Again, as I see it, “scientists” (more likely opinionated lay-persons, or people who have investments in the GMO industry), or paid GMO Trolls, who make such juvenile judgement calls don’t see how, by doing so, they damage their own reputation.

As we have seen all over the world, GMOs are being banned on
the basis of findings that show/suggest severe GMOs risks. Just to mention two key reports along those lines (besides the Seralini results):

    1) Tufts U.: Half of the Studies Find Cause For Concern … The Other Half Are Studies By the GMO Food Industry itself. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21296423

    2) NORWEGIAN GOVT STUDY: “No scientific evidence of GMO food safety”

On the other hand – as in my field of work, making embryonic-type stem cells, as we had them when we were born (same DNA, full telomere length) – GM, genetic modification (using retroviruses), despite initial negative results, is still a possibility.

Also: GLP’s Can GMOs cure cancer? Genetically engineered algae found to kill cancer cells by Ben Locwin is also truly fascinating.

Again, as I see it: Maybe, if the GLP site is strictly to promote, or point out, GMO advantages, or GM technology, why open it up to
    discussion? This can be/is self-destructive.

To some degree this is like Climate Change, where (oil, coal, once leading as source of energy), due to producing Global Warming
(GW)-causing excess CO2 has become the bad guy. Here we have the carbon industry that is using truly dirty tricks – – like the tobacco industry in the 60th – – in denying and misleading the public by – purposely – planting bogus anti-GW arguments that have brought us a giant step closer to a Permian-like earth extinction. As I see it, defined in
