University of Florida researcher Linda Bartoshuk has been recognized as an expert on interactions between smell, taste and psychology for many decades. Though vitally important to our experiences, smell and taste are poorly understood by the general public. On this episode of Talking Biotech, Bartoshuk joins plant scientist Kevin Folta to explore how we sense the world around us, and how these interactions impact our perceptions and preferences.
But this isn’t just a story about fascinating scientific discoveries. Bartoshuk’s path to becoming a leader in her field was impeded by an age-old roadblock: overt sexism. She recounts to Folta how she navigated harassment and discrimination to earn her faculty position at a preeminent university.
Linda Bartoshuk is a professor in the Food Science and Human Nutrition department at the University of Florida. She studies sensory perception of foods and has developed new measurement techniques for quantifying sensations.
Kevin M. Folta is a professor in the Horticultural Sciences Department at the University of Florida. Follow professor Folta on Twitter @kevinfolta and email your questions to [email protected].
