The Great Biotech Debate is Tuesday

Tuesday, June 4, at 2:00 p.m. ET you can watch the Genetic Literacy Project’s executive director Jon Entine debate the merits of agricultural biotechnology alongside geneticists Kevin Folta and Biofortified’s Karl Haro von Mogel. It will be streamed live on the GLP home page (click the box in the top-right of the page to view) and at the CATO Institute’s CATO Live. You can submit questions during the event via Twitter, just use the hashtag #gmodebate.

Kevin Folta is a plant geneticists at the University of Florida and a dogged science communicator. You can follow him on Twitter @kevinfolta and read an interview about GM crops with him here.

Karl Haro von Mogel is an executive editor at the biotechnology website, Biology Fortified, Inc. (better known as Biofortified). He is a Ph.D. Candidate in Plant Breeding and Plant Genetics at UW-Madison, researching the genetics of sweet corn. Von Mogel has been brought in to replace Anastasia Bodnar, also of Biofortified, who was forced to decline due to a work conflict. Anti-GM activist and author Jeffery Smith and anti-GM scientist Gilles-Eric Seralini were both scheduled to participate in the event but pulled out last week. Smith is the founder of the Institute for Responsible Technology, a “consumer advocacy” group with a strong record of opposing GM technology. Seralini is the lead researcher behind the infamous study claiming that GM foods produce cancerous tumors in rats. You can read more about their decision in last week’s newsletter feature.

We hope you’ll tune in.

Watch the debate on the Genetic Literacy Project home page or at CATO’s page tomorrow (June 4) at 2:00 p.m. ET
