GM crops and real risk

The World Apple Report has tracked the perilous road that Okanagan Specialty Fruits has been travelling to get approval for its genetically modified ArcticTM apples.

In our June 2013 issue, we discussed the potential effects on ArcticTM apples of the application for U.S. federal approval of the “InnateTM” genetically modified potato developed by the J R Simplot Company.

A further wrinkle was added to the GMO debate when a strain of GMO wheat developed by Monsanto, the agricultural biotechnology giant, was discoveredd in an isolated Oregon wheat farm eight years after the last controlled trials were completed. Monsanto had decided not to seek approval for release of that strain. As we went to press, no good explanation had been found for the occurrence.
