Grist’s Nathanael Johnson asks the question: Who is really benefiting from GMOs? He turns to lawyers, economists and advocates for insight into this highly nuanced question. The big seed companies, such as Monsanto, Dupont, and Syngenta, are definitely benefiting, Johnson reports, as are large farms that can afford GM seeds. But the answers get more complicated when looking at small farmers, particularly in the developing world, who may not be able to keep up with the high prices of GM seeds. He also looks into the anti-GMO claim that farmer suicides in India have increased because farmers can’t afford the seeds for Bt cotton.
