Angelina effect having huge impact on South Australian women: Breast cancer genetic testing referrals triple

The number of South Australian women being referred by their GPs for breast cancer genetic testing has tripled after Angelina Jolie’s announcement she had a preventative double mastectomy in May.

Latest figures reveal the SA Clinical Genetics Service receive an average of 38 referrals each week compared to 11 before the news of the actress’ plight broke .

The huge surge in women wanting tests has resulted in the waiting list blowing out from three months to nine months.
