Saskatchewan farmer Gerrid Gust has been growing genetically modified canola for more than 15 years. Gust, like many Canadian farmers, is hoping that introducing GM wheat to his family farm would produce the same kind of increased yields as he’s seen from his GM canola crops.

Dr. Robert Fraley, one of this year’s World Food Prize laureates for his work on GM crops, much of it with his multi-national agriculture produce company, Monsanto, says GM wheat is considered one of the next big steps in the biotechnology crop world.

“Wheat needs new technologies,” said Fraley. For consumers, Fraley said increased yield lowers food prices and sees security in food supply around the world, while improving nutrition and health.
