Del Monte threatens suit against Nicaraguan farmer growing its patented genetically engineered Pinkglow pineapple

In the middle of last year [2024], Fresh Del Monte indicated that it would take legal action if it was found that pink pineapple was being sold at the Tres Ríos farmers’ market in the canton of La Unión in Cartago.

This happened after El Observador obtained photos of a stand selling this fruit, whose sale in Costa Rica is not yet authorized.

In June 2023, the State Phytosanitary Service (SFE) identified several farms where pink pineapple was being illegally planted. This happened after pink pineapple was found at the Grecia farmers’ market. The land was located in Pital de San Carlos.

The destruction of the identified areas was coordinated with three of the plantation managers, and the corresponding reports were drawn up.

The same documentation was collected on two other properties, and the case was referred to the judicial authorities. This was because the people in charge refused to cooperate with the destruction.
