Viewpoint: Beware the cancer quacks: Here’s why ‘functional-medicine-doctor-practicing-without-a-license’ Casey Means is a disaster choice for surgeon general

Untitled (Facebook Post) (1)

It appears that our next U.S. Surgeon General will be Casey Means, who labels herself a “functional medicine” doctor. Or maybe I should put “doctor” in quotes as well, because she doesn’t have a license to practice medicine, although she did graduate from Stanford medical school.

Most people probably haven’t heard of functional medicine, so let’s clear this up, before the new Surgeon General can muddy the waters: Functional Medicine is not medicine at all. Instead, it’s a new name for an old grab-bag of unscientific, unsupported, and outright bogus claims.

It’s not surprising that our wackadoodle Secretary of HHS, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., would nominate a functional medicine proponent to be Surgeon General. What’s sad is that despite RFK Jr.’s appalling ignorance, and despite Casey Means’ utter lack of qualifications for the job (she’s never actually practiced medicine and isn’t licensed to do so), she will almost certainly be confirmed by a pliant U.S. Senate, and then, alas, many people will listen to what she says.
