“Outside my favorite coffee shop is a “Yes on 522” sign,” writes Elizabeth Hovde, a columnist for The Oregnoian. “Initiative 522 is a Washington state initiative that would require foods produced entirely or partly with genetic engineering to carry labels saying they are genetically engineered when offered for sale to Washington consumers. There are exemptions in the initiative for things such as cow’s milk, meat, cheese, wine and beer, and labels would not be required in restaurants.”
“I asked a barista I adore whether the coffee shop simply allowed the 522 camp to plant a sign out front or if the shop owners were supportive of the measure, hoping that if they were, I could hear their thoughts. Nothing like conquering some research while waiting for a latte, after all.”
