The first harvest of genetically modified seeds in Russia will take place in 2016. In September of this year, Russian authorities announced that GM seeds would be allowed to be cultivated in Russia. Farmers can start buying seeds and planting them in July of 2014.
Currently, Russia allows certain varieties of GM crops—corn, potato, soybean, rice and sugar beet—to be cultivated on experimental fields. Several members of the Russian media have disclosed that “vertically integrated agricultural holdings [are] already cultivated and used in GM feed crops, but unofficially.”
First resolution for cultivating GM crops can be obtained one and a half to two years after the start of the registration, according to the president of the Russian Grain Union.
