Africa was one of the first places that adopted GM crops, but most of countries in Africa have refused to adopt it. The development of the technology and its impact has raised interesting questions as to its future. A major issue with GM is it gains an awful lot of negative press, which damages the uptake of the technology. So far, only three countries in Africa have really embraced GM crops (South Africa, Burkina Faso and Egypt). The technology is in its infancy, and the altering of genetic makeup of living organisms leads to concerns around the impact on biodiversity which is difficult to test from within the lab.
