Genetically modified sweet corn is better for the environment, the Entomological Society of America reports. The GM sweet corn produces a protein known as “Bt” that is toxic to pests but not harmful to humans. Field trials around the US confirmed that the Bt sweet corn is resistant to pests and reduces the need for chemical pesticides. The authors of the study, which was published in the Journal of Economic Entomology, predict that the cultivation of Bt sweet corn would dramatically reduce the need for harmful insecticides.
