Genetic links to autism have been discovered by Yale researchers.
The scientists have identified which types of brain cells and regions of the brain are affected by genetic mutations linked to the disorder, which could result in new treatments, according to a press release.
The scientists analyzed data on gene expression generated by BrainSpan, a project to create an atlas of the human brain. Particular neural circuits were affected by genes that carry a risk for autism, the researchers found, as well as “when, where and in what cell types those genes exert their effects on the developing human brain and lead to autism spectrum disorders,” the release stated.
