Three activists carrying a refrigerator to set up on the street to attract attention to problems faced by the country’s farmers in competing with genetically-modified foods, or GMO foods, from abroad.
At the end of February the Russian government approved legislation banning growing and breeding GMO-containing plants and animals.
Sergei Raksha, Truth About Food NGO: “Now the situation is very complicated. GMO is de facto allowed, but it is allowed only for sale, which means that shelves in our shops are filled with products containing GMOs. At the same time, Russian farmers, Russian companies, and in general on Russian territory, it is forbidden to grow any genetically-modified agricultural plants. So the situation is: shops are allowed to import GMOs, but farmers growing them is banned.”
