NY State PTA proposal to ban GMOs in schools ‘contrary to science, common sense’

When it holds its annual meeting in November in Saratoga Springs, [New York State Parent Teacher Association] NYSPTA will vote on a resolution urging the state to ban all food and drinks that contain “GMOs” from school cafeterias and vending machines. This proposal is contrary to science and common sense.

Every reputable scientific body and regulatory agency that has examined these methods — from the National Academies of Science and the American Medical Association to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and World Health Organization — has declared them as safe as older techniques. … Some in NYSPTA beg to differ. Using language and absurd allegations that appear to be lifted wholesale from anti-genetic engineering websites…

Of course, this idea of schools going GMO-free, or even organic, isn’t new. Food-faddists can point to the Sausalito-Marin City school district, which now only serves organic and “GMO-free food.” The problem is that Marin County is full of high-tech billionaires. … Even they couldn’t afford to make the change to organic without huge subsidies from Whole Foods and other private donors…
