We might not realise or give it any thought but the type of work we prefer, whether we pursue a leadership position, our risk-taking appetite or our entrepreneurial drive – are all influenced by our genes.
We are more likely to pursue and feel comfortable in certain careers because of our genetic predisposition. This also means that our level of interest in a job, job satisfaction, performance, as well as income are influenced by genetics.
People who often choose professions such as engineering do so because of their ability to hyper systemise, understand complex technical instructions and remember details with accuracy. While some would prefer an intellectually stimulating career, others would find more satisfaction in a job that requires working with one’s hands.
Genetics also plays a role in the decisions such as sticking to a job or to pursue entrepreneurship. The innate desire for autonomy and freedom can push us into business ventures if we are comfortable with associated risks.

By integrating the knowledge of our genes and hence our inherent abilities, we can also take our career counselling and management systems to the next level and help individuals take paths which will not just align with their interests but also what they are likely to be hugely successful in, realising their optimal potential.
