Therapeutic vaccines for some cancers have entered clinical trials. Do they represent the future of cancer treatment? Regulations, fearmongering campaigns and lawsuits—a combined threat one scientist calls the “regulator-activist-legal-complex”—keep useful technologies off the market. What can we do to stop it?

Podcast:

Join hosts Dr. Liza Dunn and GLP contributor Cameron English on episode 289 of Science Facts and Fallacies as they break down these latest news stories:

Vaccines that train the immune system to attack tumors have begun the long journey to earn FDA approval. Unlike immunizations that prevent diseases from developing, these novel shot are administered to people at high risk for certain cancers and could help their immune systems kill tumor cells before they do significant damage. The results of early research are promising, though we’re still a long way from treating cancer with vaccination.

Regulation, litigation and activist fearmongering have been used as a vicious combination to keep innovative products off the market entirely or significantly slow their deployment. For instance, nuclear power is safe, affordable and entirely carbon neutral, yet the same regulatory agencies, lawyers and activists who warn about the climate crisis oppose the use of nuclear energy to fuel our modern societies.  They have worked for decades to limit the use of nuclear power under the false assumption that another Chernobyl disaster is imminent. But that just isn’t true.
