Unapproved GMO wheat discovered on Washington state farm, USDA says

The USDA is investigating the discovery of genetically engineered wheat found in an unplanted Washington state farm field. The exact location was not identified, nor did the USDA say how many plants were found.

Samples of the wheat plants from the field were sent to the USDA …. for testing and confirmation, according to a joint statement by the National Association of Wheat Growers and U.S. Wheat Associates, the overseas marketing arm of the industry.

“USDA is collaborating with our state, industry and trading partners, and we are committed to providing all our partners with timely and transparent information about our findings,” USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service said in a press release.

There is no evidence the genetically engineered wheat entered the food supply, the release said. No GE wheat is for sale or under commercial production in the U.S. and APHIS has not deregulated any GE wheat varieties.
