A British Columbia Cancer Agency study of 26 terminally ill patients is using genomic information from both tumours and normal cells to tailor treatments as part of a global movement among medical researchers to find the most effective way to treat individual cancers by harnessing the power of genetic coding.
Because it’s a relatively new and highly experimental line of research, the agency sought people whose cancers had already spread – or metastasized – to other parts of their bodies and who had exhausted their treatment options. This information led to new treatments in some cases, but it’s not known if that lengthened any lives.
