Role of GMOs for food security in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda

The Center for Strategic & International Studies has released a report that investigates the current status of the GMO debate in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. Faced with urgent food security issues, these countries are questioning whether genetically modified crops would “improve food security among smallholder farmers.” The report focuses on “communication and public opinion [of GMOs], the status of biosafety regulatory structures, scientific and research capacity, and the potential impact on smallholder farmers’ food security.” The authors note that the report does not take a stance in support of or against the technology.
