Despite the availability of biotechnology and all its potential, Nigeria is yet to fully tap from biotechnology to feed its teeming population, Vice Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria, Professor Vincent Ado Tenebe, has said. Tenebe, a professor of agronomy, spoke as the chairman of the 27th annual international conference of the Biotechnology Society of Nigeria (BSN) on the theme, ‘Biotechnology: A critical tool for achieving food security, affordable health care delivery and rapid industrialisation,’ which took place at the Nigerian Institute for Trypanosomiasis and Onchocerciasis Research, Kaduna.
“We have not, as a nation, Nigeria paid more attention to this very important tool ( biotechnology) provided to us. And the fact still remains that we have all the natural resources that we require to take advantage of biotechnology,” Tenebe said.
He called on the biotechnology society of Nigeria (BSN) and all scientists in Nigeria to take the government and politicians along in their research findings. “The fact of the matter is I am calling on us all BSN and scientists that unless we carry the politicians along, all the results of our researches will end nowhere. The mistake we scientists and professors are making is we concentrate on our labs, discover so much, yet the result is not made available to the politicians or we don’t even have the time to show them the relevance,” he said.
