Genes controling eye color also affect pain perception

They’re often referred to as the windows to the soul, but now it’s been claimed your eyes can actually reveal a great deal about you. From whether you’re predisposed to an illness, feel pain more than others or can handle your drink, it’s been claimed your eyes provide some big insights into your wellbeing.

Most recently researchers at the University of Pittsburgh have looked at the link between pain thresholds and eye colour, with claims women with blue or green eyes can handle being hurt better than those with brown or hazel peepers. 58 women who were expecting babies were studied, with those in the former group apparently coping with childbirth the best.

The research is still being looked in to but it’s thought genetics could be the cause of the differences. This is because the genes which determine eye colour also do other things in the body.

“One of them, NCX-4, which is linked to darker eyes, controls many proteins, of which one has recently been linked to pain,” explained Dr Jari Louhelainen, a senior lecturer in biomolecular sciences at Liverpool John Moores University, to British newspaper The Daily Mail.
