As Nigerian population explodes, GMOs languish in political purgatory

Officials of the Nigerian Society for Microbiology (NSM) have alerted the Federal Government to brace up to the challenge of managing the nation’s population, which is expected to hit 300 million by the year 2030.

In a statement issued at the weekend, signed by the NSM President, Professor Ifeoma Enweani and Secretary, Professor Mohammed Dauda Mukhtar, members of the Society explained that while the government contends with the challenges ahead, “note must be taken of the fact that microorganisms have the capacity to generate a vast array of products that are of direct benefit to man and his environment, attention should be driven towards harnessing these to man’s advantage.”

Besides, Prof. Enweani said that though modern biotechnology requires major capital investment, “but in Nigeria the required infrastructural investment is still at a very low level.”  He urged government to embark on capital investment in modern biotechnology, while stressing that, “microorganisms are important in food production and food processing.
