Anti-GMO groups exploiting liberal fear of President-elect Trump

“It’s time to fight,” reads the subject line of an email from the organic-funded Just Label It campaign…. The fight? The long-waged battle for mandatory labeling of … “GMOs.” The newest weapon in the fight? Liberal fear of Donald Trump.

. . . .

It’s unclear how Trump’s administration will handle agricultural genetic engineering, with speculation but little substance from all sides on how the issue will be handled. …

The bottom line is “GMOs” aren’t a partisan issue, and shouldn’t be treated as such. When it comes to genetic engineering, science-based regulation is the way to go. …

Evidence-based policy on genetic engineering will bolster innovation and competition, oiling the wheels of progress toward justice. It’s not okay for anti-GMO interest groups to exploit liberal fear of Donald Trump. The injustice his presidency threatens to usher in, and the bigotry on which he ran sickens me. To a lesser degree, the injustice of stifling genetic engineering also sickens me, because it hurts people, the environment, and farmers.

. . . .

David Sutherland, co-founder of pro-GMO grassroots organization March Against Myths echoes my feelings…:

“…The anti-GMO movement utilizes fear as their greatest asset. It’s no surprise they would appropriate the Trump bogeyman to elicit donations and support.”
