AI-generated images are becoming a tool of government disinformation—even in the United States

Levy Armstrong’s arrest came less than two weeks after the killing of Renée Good in the snowy streets of south Minneapolis by ICE officer Jonathan Ross, and six days before the shooting of ICU nurse Alex Pretti by a US Border Patrol agent.

… The White House’s X account then posted an image of Levy Armstrong in tears, being handcuffed and led away by federal agents, describing her as a ‘far left agitator’.

But this image was not real. It had been digitally altered using AI …. In the original shot, Levy Armstrong is composed, head held high. In the White House version, her mouth is twisted in agony, tears pouring down her face.

It was also the fourteenth AI-generated post made by the official White House account since the start of Trump’s second term …. Trump is the first president to wholeheartedly embrace AI …. And he is not the only far-right leader to use the technology for propagandistic and authoritarian ends.

AI-generated imagery has become the dominant aesthetic of a global techno-fascism movement ….
