GMO is … one of the options that should be adopted to quicken the process of research in the areas of pest and disease control, weed control and nutrient value addition in most staple food crops. It is needed in the large scale growing of non-food crops like cotton, which has over time declined due to very high relative cost of its production. Its regulation should have the major objective of supporting and promoting local scientists to come up with specific technologies that respond to local needs. It should serve to restrict unfavourable competition from foreign technologies, especially in the areas of patent rights.
