EU votes to ban insecticide chlorpyrifos, citing brain damage risk to children

A majority of EU countries voted to ban chlorpyrifos, an insecticide deemed unsafe for human health by the EUโ€™s food safety watchdog this year.

The European Food Safety Authority established links between the substance and brain-damage in children, also classifying the pesticide as presumably being toxic for human reproduction.

Commission Spokesperson Vivian Loonela confirmed the result ofย  [the Dec. 6] vote in favor of a Commission proposal not to renew the substanceโ€™s EU license when it expires on January 31.
