The claim that sows are “immobilized” in gestation stalls is misrepresented and inaccurate. Gestation stalls provide each sow with her own protected access to feed and water without competition, along with room to stand, lie down and stretch. Peer-reviewed research has not demonstrated turning around improves welfare outcomes. In hybrid housing systems where sows can choose between stalls or open pen space, they consistently choose stalls.
