Cartoonist Lauren Weinstein was blindsided when, nearly halfway through her second pregnancy, she discovered both she and her husband were carriers for cystic fibrosis.
Weinstein documented the decision making process following those initial results as she and her husband learned more about the condition, considered whether to carry her pregnancy to term and pursued further genetic testing to discover whether her fetus was a CF carrier or affected with the progressive lung disease.
The cartoon series, which appears in the online magazine Nautilus, also presents an unique way of explaining the complicated considerations of relative risk that patients and parents affected by genetic conditions face.
