As biology has advanced, it’s become increasingly clear that the environment and yes, even choice, have a remarkable impact on how systems work. For example, work in the field of epigenetics demonstrates that environment can have a profound influence on how DNA impacts biology. And long-term brain studies have demonstrated that the structure of the brain can change based on behavior and environment. The assumption that we’re “hardwired” is sorely mistaken.
