It’s historically been known as the disease of the aristocracy and long thought to be the result of an overindulgent lifestyle, but now scientists believe gout actually runs in the family.
Researchers at Nottingham University found that gout was twice as likely when a parent had the disease while having a twin with grout raised the risk eight-fold.
Gout is a kind of inflammatory arthritis, marked by the sudden onset of excruciating pain, redness and swelling in the joints. It most commonly begins in the big toe. It is caused by monosodium urate crystals being deposited on the joints because of high uric acid in the blood.
