Cotton Board of Zambia board secretary Dafulin Kaonga said Government should invest in modern biotechnology, including genetic engineering, to develop cotton and other crops of high quality and sustain their production.
Mr Kaonga said Zambia should partner with reputable biotechnology companies and also involve farmers in the development and adoption of genetically modified cotton. “I call upon the Government to consider investing in capacity development in modern biotechnology. Once the human resource base and infrastructure is adequate, the country will be able to develop its own genetically modified crops which will be available to farmers at a lower cost,” he said.
“Zambia needs to continue with the precautionary approach towards adoption of genetically modified organisms if farmers are to increase production of cotton,” he said.
