Recent articles by investigative journalist David Zaruk, writing on his “Risk-Monger” blog, reveal that the United Nations agency that assesses the cancer risk of various activities or substances, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), has reached a new low in bureaucratic dishonesty, distortion and flagrant conflicts of interest.

. . . [G]iven the stench emanating from the IARC process–the seemingly rigged and certainly incompetent review, Guyton’s bias and Portier’s flagrant conflict of interest and his unseemly lobbying for a ban on glyphosate–some may be having second thoughts.
Zaruk has called for the glyphosate monograph to be withdrawn and the IARC disbanded because it is irredeemably politicized. While the latter isn’t likely, withdrawal of the monograph may be possible. Outrage from the scientific community has reached a crescendo, and the IARC’s parent agency, WHO, is convening an extraordinary meeting this month to consider the glyphosate issue. A “Geneva-based WHO insider” was recently quoted as saying, “There is talk here now of needing to rein IARC in.”
