Can GMOs save us from climate change?

Although the world currently grows enough food to feed the entire population, food is not distributed evenly. Malnutrition and starvation are problems that occur all over the world, primarily in developing countries. In coming years, as climate change negatively impacts  global food production and the population grows, this problem will only get worse.

Various international organizations, such as the U.N, and and government agencies have adopted plans and introduced policy to help aid and feed malnourished people in all parts of the world. However, these these solution to do not create or grow more food. One solution could be the widespread implementation of growing genetically modified foods and crops.

Growing more genetically modified foods, especially in the regions at with the highest risk for the most climate change, the tropical region, could also help to reduce the cost of foods. When food prices rise, poor people tend to but low cost- high calorie foods, which only adds to the malnutrition rate.

Successful plans to increase food supply should include policies which will help the globe adapt to climate change and the problems that come with it. Increasing the amount of genetically modified foods that can grow in harsher climates will help to ensure greater food security in the future.
