Anti GM-salmon petition nears one million supporters

The following is an edited excerpt.

Almost one million people have signed an online petition to stop the US approving a scheme that would allow genetically modified salmon to enter the food chain.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is in favour of allowing a fish produced by scientists at AquaBounty to reach the dinner table.

The GM AquAdvantage fish has been modified through a growth gene which means it grows year-round instead of during spring and summer.

That allows it to reach market size within 18 months, rather than the three years required by a “natural” fish.
