How to genetically engineer humans, safely

In a post for Project Syndicate, biomedical ethics professor Maxwell Mehlman outlines the challenges of safely genetically engineering humans. Among those challenges: Determining when it’s persmissible to interfere with a parent’s decisions, regulating physicians at fertility clinics, and making sure that genetic technologies are available to everyone. 

“Full-scale human evolutionary engineering is still far off,” Mehlman writes, “but, at some point in the future, it may well become routine. The challenge for humanity is twofold: to survive long enough to reach that point, and to cause the least amount of harm while getting there.”
