Tamar Haspel of the Washington Post spoke to several organizations that had a wide variety of opinions about genetically modified food–from stringently opposed to enthusiastically supportive. He asked them to list the benefits and problems involved in genetic modification and concluded that there are three main areas where those opposed to GMOs and those supporting GMOs can agree: GMOs are causing herbicide-resistant weeds and pesticide-resistant pests, GMOs benefit big agriculture organizations and farmers but do little for the consumer, and GMOs need to be judged on a case-by-case basis. Or, as Haspel writes, “perhaps we have to focus more on the O and less on the GM.”
