Bayer’s top exec on pesticides suggested the agrichemical giant would consider legal action if the EU decides to ban the world’s most-used herbicide glyphosate in late 2022. Asked whether Bayer would seek to defend the safety of glyphosate in the courts, Crop Science Division President Liam Condon told Morning Agri: “If we feel a scientific process, an established regulatory pathway, is being completely ignored, then of course we’ve got to look at all our options.”
Political pressure to get rid of the substance in Europe is mounting, with Germany the latest government to announce a phase-out. The French government and the Austrian parliament have also signaled their intent to do away with glyphosate, which is the key ingredient in the Roundup herbicide.

The European Court of Justice has ruled there are “no grounds” to question the validity of the plant protection products (PPP) regulation because EU authorities committed no “manifest errors of assessment” in evaluating the weedkiller ingredient, glyphosate. Several environmental activists in the “Voluntary Reapers of GMOs, Ariège” group had challenged the regulation’s integrity, after they were prosecuted for defacing and damaging cans of Roundup in France.
